Barbara Mietzner Obituary

Barbara Mietzner, 82 years old of Westhampton New York passed away on February 21, 2024 after a brief battle with congestive heart failure.  She went home to meet her Savior.

Barbara was born on November 9th, 1941 to Margaret (Gretel) and Mathias Maier . Raised in the Bronx and Astoria, NY, Barbara learned of her inner strength and power from her loving and industrious parents. After graduating from Julia Richmond High School, she was married to her husband Kurt, at the youthful age of 21. Barbara met Kurt, the love of her life at age 13, and they married in April 1963 and three children followed; Barbara Ann, Kurt & Linda.  Their romance continued to just shy of their 60-year anniversary when he passed away last February.  Their love was pure magic and their devotion to one another and was admired by all who knew them.

After a short time as newlyweds, they were stationed at the Army base in Fort Dix, NJ.  After an honorable discharge for Kurt, they settled at their home on Lithonia Avenue in Flushing , NY, where they raised their family for 50 years. Barbara was a caring, supportive and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend.   Their home was filled with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and loved ones. Barbara celebrated with beautiful traditions of baking, cooking authentic German meals (she was known for her Sauerbraten) and of course her awesome “Christmas Cookies”.

Barbara was known for her gorgeous megawatt smile, her kind and easy heart and her generous friendship. Like her nickname “Le Bear”, she was a powerhouse, but internally a sweet softie. She was physically known for her smooth and ageless skin that made her look years younger, her rosy cheeks, her soft and feminine hands and her incredibly boisterous laugh. God did not give such a good laugh in error, and it was definitely not wasted in such a joyous person.

Barbara was a woman of great faith and she enjoyed her steadfast Sunday attendance at church. Even when she was no longer well enough to go in person, she watched mass on television weekly.  She was an avid pray-er, and her prayers would keep her up for hours with her mental checklist of each individual who she remembered so carefully.

Barbara and Kurt retired in 2012 to their much loved home in Westhampton, NY.  Their home was their castle, and it was a blessing they both left this world in that home, just as they had wished, each surrounded by love, their faith, German music, family and friends.

Barbara was a wonderful Oma to her three grandchildren Charlotte, Kurt and Aidan. Like any proud Oma, she found immense joy in their successes both academically and on the sports field.  She was also had a deep fondness for animals and nature.

Anyone who knew Barbara knew that she was the most loving mother and wife a family could ask for.  We mourn the loss of our mother and encourage any and all who knew her to remember the beauty she brought to this world.  She is predeceased by her parents Margaret and Mathis, her husband Kurt, her brother George, and is survived by her children Barbara Ann and Steven, Kurt and Michele, Linda and Michael, and their three grandchildren Charlotte, Kurt Jr. and Aidan.
