Carol A. (Sacknievich) Canavan, age 76, of Westhampton, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 12, 2022, surrounded by her family after a short illness. Carol was born in Queens, NY, on May 31, 1946, to Chester and Sophie (Yudiski) Sacknievich. She was a graduate of Dominican Commercial High School in Queens, NY, class of 1963. Carol married the love of her life George T. Canavan on May 2,1964, and they were married for over 58 years. Carol is survived by her loving husband George, as well as her daughter Denise Michalowski and her husband Tony of East Quogue, NY, her daughter Lisa Slover and her husband David of Fort Pierce, FL, her son Daniel Canavan of Westhampton, NY, and her daughter Elizabeth McCann and her husband Gregory of Rehoboth, MA. Carol is survived by her 11 grandchildren, who were the joy of her life: Vanessa, Matthew and Dillon Canavan, Danielle and Ryan Michalowski, Joseph, Yordi, Alex and Danny Slover, and Patrick and Zachary McCann. Carol is also survived by her sister, Patricia Sheehan, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family & friends. Carol is predeceased by her parents, as well as her brother Chester Sacknievich, and her son Matthew G. Canavan. Carol cherished her family and was fortunate to be able to stay home for many years to raise her five children. In 1987, Carol received her Nursing Degree from Suffolk County Community College. Carol worked as a Registered Nurse at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital for 25 years, earning the distinction of Nurse of the Year, and making a lasting impact on so many of her coworkers and patients. Carol enjoyed the beach, gardening, cooking, her morning coffee, a good card game, shopping, fishing trips with her family, and spending time with friends. Carol and George enjoyed their winters with their many friends on Hutchinson Island in Jensen Beach, FL. Carol most of all loved the time she spent with her husband George, her children and her grandchildren, especially hosting large family gatherings and celebrations at their beautiful home in Westhampton. She welcomed everyone into her home and was a second mother, sister and grandmother to so many. Carol was a strong woman who left everyone better than she found them. She had a generous and tireless spirit, and her irreplaceable mark on the world will be carried on by the countless she inspired. Arrangements are made under the direction of Werner Rothwell Funeral Home, 60 Mill Road, Westhampton Beach, NY. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 16, 2022, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 580 Main St, Westhampton Beach, NY on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 1pm. Burial to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, 41 Main St, Center Moriches, NY. Friends and family are invited after to celebrate Carol’s life at the Canavan home in Westhampton, NY. Flowers/memorial contributions are welcome. Donations can be made in her name to Friends of Westhampton Ambulance, 3 Hazelwood Ave, Westhampton Beach, NY.
