Christopher Robin Hurley Obituary

Christopher Robin Hurley
June 7, 1952 - August 24, 2021
Chris Hurley, beloved partner, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully on the 24th of August, 2021 at the Kanas Center in Westhampton Beach, NY after a long illness. He was 69. He is survived by his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer Harvey, and his siblings, Ken Hurley (Carol), Pam Gubellini and Amy Kapinos (Robbie). Chris was an amazing “Unc”  to Matthew, Amy, Amanda, Brendan, Morgan, Reid, Trent, Daniel, Stephanie and their significant others. He is predeceased by his father Walter Hurley and mother Anne Backman Hurley.
In his final days and hours he was surrounded by the love and comfort of his family, Jen and friends.

Chris grew up in Wellesley, MA where he excelled in sports and had a special passion for hockey and golf. He graduated Wellesley High in 1970 where he captained the hockey and golf teams and did a post-graduate year at Vermont Academy before attending University of Vermont. While at UVM he played right wing on their championship hockey teams, ’71-'75. Chris continued to be an avid golfer throughout his life and played every chance he could get with friends and family.

Chris spent the last 40 years of his life in Westhampton Beach, NY, a place he loved. Twenty-five of those years were spent behind the front bar at Magic’s Pub where he mentored many in how to manage a restaurant and held court with his sharp wit, sarcasm and humor. He had an infectious laugh, always laughing at his own jokes, along with a lovable grumpiness that resulted in the endearing nickname “Surly Hurley”. He was a listening ear and guiding light in the school of hard knocks wherever he worked including Tequila Flats, Dora’s, Jonesey's and for the last 6 years, Buoy One.

Though living in NY, he remained a devoted Boston sports fan. He loved the Patriots and Bruins but the Red Sox were his favorite team and he let everyone know it. So much so, that he started the annual Yankees vs. Red Sox Jersey Challenge.

Most importantly, Chris was a good man with a kind heart who could light up a room with his presence. He loved his friends and loved life. He fought bravely to the end and will be greatly missed by all who knew him and benefited from his generous spirit.

A celebration of his life will be scheduled in late September in Westhampton Beach, NY (date TBD). For those who can’t attend in person, it will be live-streamed via the internet.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kanas Center, Westhampton Beach at www.eeh.org and the Claire B. Frank Fundraiser, a cause dear to Chris’ heart, for those in the restaurant business in need. Send checks to Claire B. Frank Fundraiser, PO Box 658 Speonk, NY 11972 - made out to “The Claire B.
