Dorothy Joan Payne formerly of Ridge, NY, Westhampton Beach, NY and Fort Pierce, FL passed away peacefully on April 27, 2022 at the young age of 87.
Dotty was the youngest of four children born to Josephine and Lindsay Payne in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Westhampton Beach High School in 1952 and went on to secretarial school and attended the American Institute of Banking. Dot went on to enjoy a successful career in banking, leading the way for other women. Dot started her banking career with her local bank as a teller and progressed up the corporate ladder reaching the position of Vice President. She was employed by Security National Bank, Chemical Bank, and J.P. Morgan Chase. Among her many accomplishments, Dotty was the President of the Moriches Chamber of Commerce, Treasurer of the Moriches Salvation Army, the first female President of the Suffolk Chapter of the American Institute of Banking, as well as the first female member of their Board of Directors.
Dotty was known for her bubbly personality, wonderful laugh, great love of her dear family and friends, strong faith and sage advice. She was an avid animal lover. Dot was a frequent traveler and had many opportunities to travel all over the world with her friends and family. She was a “take charge” person and frequently did all of the driving on her many adventures - from driving her 6 companions in a 7 woman van to driving on a small, one lane road in Ireland and having an encounter with a lovely cow who put her head in the window at Dot. Wherever Dot travelled she always felt at home and welcomed by fellow travelers and residents of the communities she visited, she never met a stranger.
Dot was predeceased by her dear parents: Josephine and Lindsay Payne, siblings: Lindsay (Edith) Payne, Margaret (Hugh) Murtagh, and John Payne, nieces Linda Payne, Susan Payne Kyle, Valerie (Roy) Hargis, and Tracey Murtagh, cousin Irene (Leo) Spagna, and dear friends: Tillie and Hank Bauer and Cliff Towle. She is survived by her loving family: Margaret (Thomas) Monahan, Sean Payne, Lindsay (Lori) Payne, Matthew (Sharon) Payne and Tara (Neil) Condon, Hugh Murtagh, Elizabeth (Ross) Murtagh Haine, Patrick Murtagh, Michael (Anne) Murtagh and numerous great nieces and nephews, as well as her adopted Bauer family .Dot’s family would like to thank Erica, Lori, Marion, Nancy and Wilma, her home health caretakers; Dr. Evan Nadal and his staff; and the team at Sunrise of Westtown for all of their wonderful care and support.
She will always live on in our hearts.
A funeral mass will be held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Westhampton Beach, NY on Saturday May 14, 2022 at 10 o’clock in the morning followed by burial at the Westhampton Cemetery at 28 Montauk Highway.
