Edward Schroeder Obituary

Edward P. Schroeder, Lawyer and Avid Fisherman of Remsenburg, Dies at 97

Edward P. Schroeder of Remsenburg, NY, died May 25, 2021. He was 97 years old.

Edward was born on August 22, 1923 in Pittsburgh, PA. His family moved to New Hyde Park and he graduated from Sewanhaka High School in 1940.

Edward was a decorated U.S Army veteran. He served in World War II as a Second Lieutenant in the 4th Armored Division of General George S. Patton’s Third Army as Platoon Leader. He was seriously wounded in action on Easter Sunday, 1945 in Germany and spent nearly a year at Halloran General Army Hospital recovering from his injuries. His life was saved by a prayer book sitting in a pocket over his heart which stopped a bullet from a German gun. He was awarded the Purple Heart, and many other citations.

Upon recovering from his injuries, he returned to Ohio University and completed his undergraduate degree in 1947. He graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 1950 and practiced law for over 60 years, from 1951 until his retirement in 2014. He began his career in the Town Attorney’s Office of the Town of North Hempstead where he served as Deputy Town Attorney until 1965. He also served as Village Attorney of the Incorporated Village of New Hyde Park before maintaining his own practice focused on Real Estate Law and Trust and Estates Law. Over the years he had offices in Mineola, Garden City, Islandia, Ronkonkoma, and Remsenburg.

He was a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association, the Suffolk County Bar Association, the Retired Officers Association, and the Phi Delta Phi Fraternity.

Edward was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was married to Joanne Wells from 1946 until her death in 1991.

Known as “Captain Ed” to many, he was an avid deep-sea fisherman and boater. He was happiest on the water, working on his boat, and spending time with family and friends.

He will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to The National WWII Museum, 945 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 or www.NationalWW2Museum.org
