Frances was born on November 17, 1925, in London, England, the younger daughter of Frank Edward James Vernon and Lilian Edith Parham Vernon. She and her older sister Diana were raised in the small community of Pinner, Middlesex, England, attending a Roman Catholic Convent school and public school until the age of sixteen, at which age all English citizens were required to do war work. Frances joined her mother at the American Red Cross in London. After the war, Frances worked for British European Airways igniting a lifelong love of travel. In 1952 Frances travelled to Arlington, Virginia to visit her sister who had married an American officer she met during WWII. The intended 6-month trip to a booming America from a still-rationing England proved too enticing to leave. Finding work at B.O.A.C. she happily remained in the Washington, D.C. area where she met Basil F. La Trobe-Bateman. She married Basil in 1958.
Raising a family became her career until the early 1970s when she returned to the travel industry, eventually owning her own travel company specializing in vacation and corporate travel. At the time, an independent travel agency with an energetic and enterprising female CEO was unusual. Frances’ ability for clear-thinking, steady and fair dealings, and a no-nonsense approach to all, made her a respected presence in the industry.
In addition, Frances loved an active life of tennis, golf, gardening, bridge, and tutoring children in reading and writing. An active participant in the Episcopal church, Frances was on the vestry and a Lay Eucharistic Minister at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Memphis, Tennessee and Farragut, Tennessee.
Frances died peacefully and calmly at home on November 14, 2023, with her family surrounding her. Frances is predeceased by her son, Julian Vernon St. George La Trobe-Bateman, her husband of over forty years, Basil, and her grandson Spencer. She is survived by her son Christopher Michael Parham La Trobe-Bateman, her daughter Melissa Diana Marian La Trobe-Bateman (Chris Ryder) and Lisa Owenby Bateman; her grandchildren Charles Frederick La Trobe-Bateman (Lia), Georgina Frances La Trobe-Bateman Ryder, Benjamin Henry La Trobe-Bateman, Melissa Caroline Shook (Steven), Julian Andrew La Trobe Ryder, Olivia Marie La Trobe Ryder, and Harry St. George La Trobe-Bateman; her great-grandson Julian Spencer Shook; and her nieces Judy Devey and Francie Wharen.
Hers was a life well-lived and well-loved! Cheers to her!
There will be a Memorial Service for Frances at St. James Episcopal Church in New York City at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 14, 2023. A Reception at the church will follow the service.
