Francis J. Mooney, Jr. of Westhampton Beach, New York, the devoted husband of 53 years to Elizabeth Wilde Mooney and eldest son of Irish immigrants Francis and Marguerite Mooney from the Bronx, New York passed away on the morning of September 2, 2022. Frank was a prominent New York attorney in the advertising field who graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1959, went on to serve as a Captain in the Army, qualifying as an Airborne Ranger and later serving in Special Forces and Green Beret. Following his military service, he earned a J.D. from Fordham Law School and practiced law in the broadcast field, leading teams at NBC, Dancer, Fitzgerald, Sample as well as Saatchi and Saatchi and later at Dunnington Bartholow and Miller. He was well known for his knowledge of intellectual property law to craft legal solutions that enabled companies to thrive in challenging environments. Frank also maintained strong connections with Ireland and became a member of the Ireland-U.S. Council. He was a founding member of the U.S. Board of Galway University Foundation. He gave generously to philanthropies, particularly those focused on the economic development of Ireland and the Irish.
Frank was a devoted husband and an advocate for women’s equality. He supported Bette in furthering her education, developing her career, and purchasing her own TV station. The couple was very much a team.
Throughout his life, he was dedicated to his parents and three younger brothers. No matter how busy he was, he was always available to help. He deepened the family’s connection to relatives in Ireland and his own Irish heritage, eventually learning the Irish language and establishing a second home in the west of Ireland, near Lough Corrib.
He also was an avid photographer, car enthusiast, reader of history, sailor, and walker. As an authority of the streets of New York, he loved to walk home at night instead of utilizing the company’s car service. And on the weekends, Frank loved to spend time in Westhampton Beach with his treasured 1966 Sunbeam Alpine, Series V and 1967 Sunbeam Tiger. He was an avid reader and generously shared his books and knowledge with others, expanding our appreciation of history, in particular Irish history.
Frank Mooney was most known for a quiet ebullience and for his humility. Many of his nieces and nephews consider him their second father, because he was devoted to them, offering advice, supporting their education, even taking them to see the world with Bette. During the summers, the Mooney home in Westhampton Beach was an open door to all relatives in the U.S. and Ireland, who frequently gathered there.
Friends and family will remember Frank Mooney as a humble yet generous man who encouraged others to cherish their Irish roots, Notre Dame, the US, those Sunbeams of his, and family.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Wilde Mooney, brother, Bobby, and many relatives in the US and Ireland who love their brother, "Uncle Frank", and “Grand Uncle Frank” and will miss him dearly.
