Frederick Finlay Meyer
Frederick Finlay Meyer lived a full life, departing on December 18th at the age of 98. He leaves behind a legacy of stewardship, demonstrated throughout his 25-year career as a Planning Director for the Town of Smithtown, as well as his dedication to the creation and preservation of the building that is now the Remsenburg Academy.
Fred was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Floral Park. After a short stint in the army, he attended Adelphi University for his undergraduate degree and then New York University for graduate school.
During his tenure as Planning Director, Fred was instrumental in facilitating the acquisition of numerous private properties that went on to become jewels of the community, including Hoyt Farm Park and the Smithtown Township Arts Council Center.
After his retirement, he and his wife, Monica, moved to Remsenburg. Never content to stop working entirely, he consulted on many zoning and development projects on Long Island. He also immersed himself in creating many gardens at his home.
For as long as he could remember, Fred loved everything to do with gardening. His Remsenburg gardens became a work of art and gave him much satisfaction. He loved sharing them with the public, and they were included on many garden tours.
Fred Meyer was predeceased by his beloved wife, Monica Meyer. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Meyer (the late S. Kameika and the late T. Parkany) and Jennifer Martinuzzi (Eric Martinuzzi), and grandchildren, Fudia Kameika, the late Effy Kameika, Eva Martinuzzi, and Paul Martinuzzi.
There will be a service and celebration of his life in the spring.
For those wishing to express sympathy, donations to the Remsenburg Academy or East End Hospice would be a meaningful tribute.
