M. Raymond Phillips of East Quogue was born in East Quogue in 1923 to J. Norman Phillips and wife Frieda E. Dieckman. Graduated Westhampton Beach High School in 1942. Graduated N.Y.S., Maritime Academy in the fall of 1944 with an Ensign Commission in the U.S. Navy and a Third Mates Licence in the Merchant Marine.
During World War II he sailed with Grace and United Fruit Steamship Lines in the South Pacific, North Atlantic and Mediterranean areas. After the war he continued his seafaring career for another six years, retiring with an Unlimited Merchant Mariner Masters Licence for Vessels of unlimited gross tonage on all of the Oceans of the world (2nd issue).
After he retired from the sea he went into the family Real Estate business (4th generation) on Main Street East Quogue.
He married his best girl, Marian Lyba of Quogue, N.Y. and Brooklyn, N.Y. on Sept. 12, 1954.
They retired from the Real Estate Business in 1997 and spent most of their time at their place in the Bitterroot Mountains of Western Montana.
Ray greatly enjoyed sailing his SS No. 50 on Shinnecock Bay and, following his family traditions, was an avid duck hunter into his early eighties.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 1 from 6-8 PM at the Werner-Rothwell Funeral Home, 60 Mill Rd, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978. A burial will follow on Sunday, June 2 at 12 PM at Oakwood Cemetery in East Qugoue.
