Paul George “Nick” Northrup, 89, of Eastport died on November 10. After growing up in Williston Park and then Manorville, Nick served in the Navy from 1948 to 1952. Over the years he was employed as a union carpenter, worked at the Cornell University Duck Research Lab providing vaccines for the duck industry, also as a self-employed home improvement contractor, and finally as a wastewater treatment plant engineer for Strebel’s Laundry in Westhampton Beach. After his Navy service, Nick became a volunteer fireman in Manorville, and then spent 49 years in the Eastport Fire Department, reaching the rank of Captain and honored as Fireman of the Year in 1975. He was active in the Eastport American Legion Post 1545, serving for many years as Treasurer, and in the Seatuck Sportsmen’s Association. A man of many talents, one of the hobbies Nick enjoyed in his later years was making stringed musical instruments, including harps and dulcimers.
Nick is survived by his wife of 65 years, Judith, their five children, daughter April Topham of Utah, daughter Jill Porter (Chuck) of Georgia, son Mark (Sandy) of Eastport, daughter Dawn Sowell of Florida and son Paul of Eastport. Nick was the loving grandfather of 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his only sister Elaine Ruvolo of Texas. Nick was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Anthony.
