Richard, our Dad, is in Heaven now. He passed away on Monday November 7, 2022.
Rich was born in New York City. He was the second child of seven. Born to Cecilia and Harry Miller during the Great Depression he was a hard working man. Married to Carole for almost 65 years. Father to three, grandfather “Poppy” to seven, with nine great grandkids. His six brothers and sisters had 24 children between them which made family events very special.
Rich went into the Navy right after WWII and came home to work in the fishing industry on charter boats from 1950 to 1955. He married Carole in 1958. His brother Jim and he began building homes. However, the water called, and they both went back to fishing in Shinnecock Inlet where he began his career as a commercial lobsterman. Fishing was his life and he shared everything he caught.
Rich was known to have many great stories of fishing along the east coast. Those experiences led him to become the Executive Secretary of the Long Island Fishermen’s Association. Taking to politics was easy for Rich as he testified before Congress fighting for the rights of all fishermen. His work and testimony helped establish the US fishing restricted areas which the Senate voted to broaden the US fishing jurisdiction to a distance of 200 miles off the coasts beginning in July 1977.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2022, at Werner-Rothwell Funeral Home
60 Mill Road located in Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.
