Winifred Cardo Obituary

Winifred Ann Cardo (nee Raynor)

December 4, 1927 – August 9, 2024

Winifred Cardo passed away peacefully on August 9, 2024, at the age of 96.  Winnie’s life was well-lived, and because of that, she was well loved. She counted herself blessed to be married for 71 years to the love of her life, Carl Cardo.  The couple resided in Quogue, NY, for all those years where they raised their children and worked the family business.  Winnie was the bookkeeper for Charles Cardo & Son and later worked in real estate for her long-time friend, Jean, at Jean Carbone Real Estate.

Winnie was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and touched the lives of many.  She once said that the happiest years of her life were raising her two boys.  She put a priority on her family and was fully present in all she did.  Summers were spent at the beach, at her beloved Surf Club, where tremendous bonds of friendships were formed among families of all generations. Winnie was also the one who got the family into skiing. They shared a ski house with four other families (Carbone, Hurley, Mack, & McChesney) at Okemo Mountain, in Ludlow, VT.

Winnie had tremendous energy and was always on the go.  She was busy, but also very discerning about her friendships and who she spent her time with.  She was a true friend, kind and generous.  Whatever she did she was totally invested - like when she was a den mother for Randy’s Cub Scout troop, or when she got her future daughter in-law a membership at the Quogue Racquet Club so that Bev could play tennis. When her granddaughter, Kristin, was eleven, she taught her how to play golf, which was something they went on to enjoy together for many years.

Winnie had a great sense of adventure and she loved to plan special trips for Carl and her.  Carl worked hard, so Winnie made sure he had time away – just the two of them.  They loved vacationing in the islands and especially going on cruises.  In later years after Carl retired, they spent their winters in Florida.  They bought a condo in a golfing community, “Meadowood,” in Ft. Pierce, where they spent 25 years and built cherished friendships.

Winnie will always be remembered for her beautiful and fun-loving spirit, great sense of humor and terrific resilience.  If Winnie was having a bad day, you could find her on the golf course.  She found her peace there. The key to her happiness was a gratitude she carried in her heart for her family and friends. She was a child of the Great Depression and never forgot what real need was.  She lived a comfortable life and appreciated what she had.

In the last seven years Winnie was blessed to have a new best friend - her caregiver, Bobbie Betts.  Bobbie embraced Winnie with love and delight in everything she did for her, and Winnie loved her immensely. She would light up when Bobbie walked through the door.  The Cardo family will forever hold Bobbie in their hearts for the love, dignity, and care that she gave to Winnie.

Winnie is survived by her husband Carl, and her son and daughter in-law, Randy and Beverley Cardo, from Quogue, NY; her granddaughter and husband, Kristin and Dillon Bock, and great-grandchildren, Winnie and Beau Bock, from Nashville, TN; her granddaughter, Ayla Cardo, from The Dalles, OR; and her beloved caregiver, Bobbie Betts, from Westhampton Beach, NY.  Winnie was predeceased by her son, Charles Cardo (Chuck).

Winnie will be laid to rest at the Quogue Cemetery, in Quogue, NY.
